In Between; an attempt to blur two extremes together, to find a position and role within them, to create an intermediate space for dialogue, to meet half-way. As artists learn to exist and create in between life and art, they invite the viewer to step into this transitional space with them and join the conversation. The exhibition ‘In Between’ presents the results of the exploration of this space by three established Cypriot visual artists: Ioanna Kythreotou, Thekla Papadopoulou and Elena Tsigaridou. Through an interplay of their artistic practices, these artists unfold their personal thoughts and experiences in relation to the female identity, and its multi-layered existence within the ‘in-between.

Each artist explores the ‘woman’ as the subject of their work, bringing to the exhibition space different interpretations of the female existence today, both in society and consequently in contemporary art. The association of the female identity with culture, its position within the public space and its relationship with nature, are the different questions concerning the body of work presented. Aspects of these existence are then challenged against the (es)sence of place and experience, and the memories associated with it. By presenting abstracted landscapes, often disrupted by realistic and figurative elements, the artists let the viewer hover between the real and the subconscious space. This duality present in their work, places the audience in a position to find the ‘in between,’ through a personalised response to the extremes that need to me bridged.
