Situated is an art exhibition that resurfaces collection artworks and aspects of their environment, responding to ideas of place, space, and land. The University of Edinburgh’s Art Collection holds over 8,000 artworks collected over 400 years—but does not have a permanent exhibition space in which to show them. Uprooting pieces from within this collection, Situated brings together a diversity of artworks about place and the Scottish landscape and transports them to sites across the Lothians. This unique opportunity to see “behind the scenes” of a major Scottish art collection asks: How does art create a sense of place? Where do we normally see art? And what is the role of an art collection?

Situated is curated by a group of MScR students in Collections and Curating Practices, in partnership with the University’s Centre for Research Collections and the Travelling Gallery.
